Apply a Cold Compress
As the name implies, a cold compress is a name given to any washcloth that’s been soaked with chilled water. Once you have the cloth ready, gently press it over swelled up eyes until the fabric goes warm. Wet it again with cold water and repeat the process until your eyes have calmed down and resumed to their natural size.
Put Cucumber Slices
Almost every spa advertisement shows someone lounging in a bathrobe with cucumber slices covering their eyes. Have you ever wondered why that is? Well, because cold cucumber slices soothe the eyes like nothing else.
If you encounter an unwelcome guest that is puffiness frequently, keep a cucumber in the freezer at all times. Whenever the uninvited guest shows up, take the cylinder-shaped veggie out of the refrigerator, cut two 1/4 inch slices, and place them over your eyelids. Leave the cucumber pieces on until they lose their coldness.
Apply A Teabag
The science behind putting tea bags over swollen eyes is exposing them to caffeine. Research suggests that caffeine can enter the skin, reduce puffiness, and enhance blood circulation. For that reason, most black tea varieties come in handy for someone who frequently comes across puffed up eyes. You should stock up on rich, loaded-with-caffeine teas for your eyes, if not for drinking.
Sleep Well
A lack of sleep or a fitful sleep can lead to puffy eyes. If you want to prevent getting those, you need to have a good night’s sleep every day; otherwise, be prepared for the flurry of questions that will be tossed your way when you enter the office.
Don’t Overeat Salt at Dinner Time
As much as you love to sprinkle some extra crystals of flavorsome salt over your salads, pot roast, or French fries, you should avoid doing that if you don’t want to wake up with puffy eyes the next morning. A plentiful amount of salt causes water retention, which leads to puffed up skin around the eyes. Therefore, you should keep the lid of that salt shaker you love so much on during dinner.
Watch Your Alcohol Intake
Like salt, alcohol can also cause puffiness, which is why you should avoiding consuming too much of it at least 6 hours before bedtime. If you desperately want to quaff a glass of red wine, do so earlier in the day.
