If you follow Kim Kardashian West, you are probably aware of the celebrity’s face covered with blood splatter, as she told her audience about the vampire facial.
Don’t worry; it wasn’t an April Fool’s joke or Halloween makeup. Vampire facials are actually a very popular skincare treatment that may look scary, but have optimum results.
What is Vampire Facial?
So, what is a vampire facial? The name may be enough to put you off, but we are here to assure you that this facial is performed in the light of the day. It combines the use of microdermabrasion, along with platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP). PRP is taken from the patient’s own blood, which is loaded with platelets. Platelets ensure growth, and when used on the skin, they increase the rate of cell turnover.
In layman terms, your own blood is used to stimulate skin cells. Our blood contains red blood cells and serum, which is loaded with white blood cells and platelets. Together, they act as an energy boost for the skin. When injected into the skin, it helps increase collagen and skin elasticity. PRP is used alongside micro-needling to increase penetration into the skin. Plasma is injected into the skin the same way as dermal fillers.
What Happens in a Vampire Facial?
The vampire facial begins with a venipuncture. This helps draw blood from the patient. Even though it sounds scary, it is painless. All you will feel is a slight pinch at the first needle.
Once the blood has been drawn, it is run through a centrifuge that helps isolate the platelets. Before the PRPS are put on your face, you will receive the micro-needling or microdermabrasion treatment. Some places also include radio frequency during this treatment. After all, constant technological advancements have evolved the way we understand the physiology of the skin and come up with expert techniques to improve its quality.
A vampire facial doesn’t take too long to recover from. You would have to wait a day or two before you can go out in the sun. This depends on the intensity of the microdermabrasion. After the treatment, you may look a little red, just like you would look if you were sunburnt. This means after you must apply sunscreen so that your skin is protected. Furthermore, avoid wearing makeup till the skin heals.
Who Can Get a Vampire Facial?
If you have premature wrinkles, sun damage, or are looking for a fresh, youthful appearance on your skin; you should definitely opt for the vampire facial. However, those with a history of blood diseases such as clotting or bleeding disorders should not get PRP therapy.
There are not many risks attached to a vampire facial. The only risk is that after the venipuncture, your skin may bruise easily. Moreover, you will only feel slight discomfort after the blood has been drawn from your skin for the PRP treatment. The micro-needling may also make your skin feel sensitive. However, there is no real pain involved when it comes to a vampire facial. Don’t worry!
